This serene Buddha figure was cast in bronze a century ago by a Thai artisan. You’ll notice that this statue has a flame-like spike stretching upward from the crown of his head. This is called an ushnisha—it signifies wisdom, and is one of the 32 marks of the Buddha’s greatness. Many Buddha figures have this mark, but spiked ushnisha are uniquely Thai. Just like the figure depicted, age and imperfections have provided this sculpture with greater character and humanity.
