Haute Couture Home: Inspiration from Fashion Week

With its no-sleep, no-excuses ethos, New York Fashion Week is the center of the aesthetic (and Instagram) universe for seven short days. Designers presented their Fall 2017 looks, offering a preview of what we can all expect on the runway of everyday life. PAGODA RED has pulled a few key trends from the shows to infuse some high-fashion inspiration into your home.

The Banker Suit

Is there a more classic fashion staple? Designers reignited their love of the timeless tailored suit and a few went rogue, playing with proportion, sleeve, cuff length and styling. The 2017 version of the banker suit does not long for the conservative trappings of yore. In Alexander Wang’s world, his muse wears a pair of lace-up boots. PAGODA RED interprets these masculine lines in our tapered two-door black lacquer cabinets. With clean lines and the sober certainty of a mitered mortise and tenon frame, this piece is as understated as it gets.

Metal

Metallics announced their presence on the runway this season. While jewel-toned metallics were a common sight, designers also deployed silver in glamorous ways—be it modern embellishment or full-on silver drape, as seen in this luminous liquid dress by Prabal Gurung. Our selection of Gu Form Vases are made of pewter and lend metal gravity to an interior—either as displayed objects or, in the censer’s case, for burning incense.

Political Commentary

Fashion has always encouraged expression, and this season designers brought their opinions into literal existence. Messages were emblazoned on t-shirts, across hats and sweatshirts. Whether these garments make it onto the racks of mass retailers remains to be seen; however the point seemed very clear: fashion has an opinion. Artists regularly challenge, announce or supersede political realities. Our gallery represents works across the spectrum, but the message presented by artist Taikkun Li, via his handmade porcelain apples is one of peace and harmony within the universe—an idea that never goes out of style.

Crimson

Rust, oxblood, scarlet—red was all the rage, with the major houses pairing rich, warm shades within the same family, as demonstrated in this Narciso Rodriquez ensemble. Red in all its variations is a potent, emotional color. This pair of Oxblood Form Vases celebrates the artistry of the glaze, commissioned by the Imperial Court and requiring the work of a true master.

Minimalism

This is what it looks like when clothing takes a breath, according to The Row. A strong case for minimalism, the brand took the chaos of the past six months and reminded us to recenter, presenting whisper-light, pattern-free looks that simply said, “keep it simple.” A perfect distillation of this concept is the Doon Bench—a piece which has existed in Chinese gardens for centuries. Unfettered and clean-lined, the bench is carved of limestone and probably served as a perch for someone who sat in nature’s peace and tranquility.
