Made from rattan, this ovoid shield features pastel geometric designs. While shield and spear were central to African combat, this example was most likely made to commemorate or celebrate a great martial success in the owner's life. The combination of shapes, colors, and textures bears resemblance to Western Cubeism. During the height of colonial Africa, many European artists began using the traditional forms of African craftspeople as inspiration for their own work.
