In the early 1900s, a group of French artists established a design collective called the Societé des artistes décorateurs, a group which pioneered the Art Deco design movement. Architecture, art, design, fashion, and furniture were all influenced by this movement which swept rapidly across the globe. Characterized by its bold, curvilinear frame, this upholstered three-seat settee is a gorgeous example of French Art Deco of the 1930s. The settee boasts a beautiful, sinuous silhouette outlined by bent fruitwood railings that flow smoothly from the shell back to the rounded arms to the splayed front legs. The sofa is finished with peachy, pink-orange velvet upholstery, contrasted by thin black piping along each cushion and secured to the frame by a dense border of hobnail studs. Gently worn from years of use, the velvet upholstery has developed a subdued color and softened texture that enriches any space with antique character.

From the collection of Frances and Gary Comer.

Significant fading to antique velvet upholstery.
