This conical woven hat originates from 19th century China and is expertly crafted entirely of bamboo. The outside consists of slivers of bamboo woven together with rattan strips, secured by an inner lining with a rattan basket weave and a strong rattan coil at the base. These were originally in widespread use by Qing Dynasty farmers but evolved into a more sturdy and rugged design when adopted by China’s Imperial Army.

Used as a helmet, this object was produced in a way that would provide protection from blows to the head, unlike other conical hats that primarily provided protection from the sun and weather. The hat has remains of painted decoration, presumed to indicate the specific troops or brigades of the wearer. This helmet remains in remarkable condition and lives on as a sculptural object.

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
