Featuring a rooster on its lower doors, this extravagantly decorated 19th-century cabinet was likely commissioned at the time by someone born in the year of the rooster. Standing out against the cabinet’s richly lacquered black surface, the profuse and intricately rendered pewter and gilt decorations also describe on the upper doors a still life of objects found in a scholar’s studio including the treasured four of brush, ink, paper and inkstone.
