Scholarly pursuits such as painting, calligraphy, and poetry were a highly respected and revered subculture in ancient China, and demanded their own set of not only functional, but also beautiful, tools. Scholars relied on inkstones such as this one to mix their dry ink and water for use in calligraphy or painting. This hand-carved Duan stone stands apart, featuring a distinctive warm-hued "full moon" circle on its surface, beautifully worn from use. Intricate carvings of crashing waves surround the image of a horse bearing a saddle. The horse, one of the 12 symbols of the Chinese zodiac, evokes power and perseverance and may be a nod to the zodiac animal of the scholar’s birth year.
