Contrasted by a crisp white field, this small porcelain vase is decorated in the timeless blue-and-white style with bold brushwork and deep cobalt-blue color. The gracefully curved form is a traditional vase shape known as a yuhuchunping or pear-shaped vase and is defined by a rounded body, narrow neck, and flared mouth originally used for pouring wine.

The painted decoration on this example depicts a lively scene of young children playing in a courtyard garden. Young boys are seen boisterously playing various musical instruments like drums, cymbals and horns. A popular theme in Chinese decorative arts, this playful scene conveys a wish for a large family with many successful sons.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
