This early 20th-century porcelain stacking box would have been used in a woman's personal chambers to store jewelry, cosmetics, and precious small objects. The box has four tiers and is painted with overglaze enamels against white underglaze. The sides of each layer are decorated with loosely brushed trailing vines and butterflies, symbols of happiness. The lid depicts a two boys riding a mythical qilin, a gentle creature of benevolence and longevity. A common motif in the Chinese decorative arts, this scene represents a wish for many illustrious sons.
