This 19th-century Chinese bench was constructed of northern elmwood (yumu) using mortise-and-tenon joinery techniques. The provincial bench has a narrow seat raised by splayed legs and is simply decorated with cloud-form carved spandrels. Originating as shared seating in public gathering spaces, simple benches such as this would have been placed in front of the home as outdoor seating during the hot summer months.
