The use of low tables can be traced to the early floor mat-level culture in China. This early 20th century red lacquered low table features an ornately painted top depicting the Shou character for longevity, auspicious flowers and eight fish. Eight is a number that represents good fortune, and fish symbolize abundance and affluence. Layers upon layers of painstakingly hand-applied red lacquer give this table its brilliant finish.
