Spoiled Huali Mirror

This early-20th century wall mirror is crafted from huali rosewood, a highly esteemed hardwood valued for its tight grain and warm coloring. The angular lower corners of the rosewood frame indicate that the mirror was originally accompanied by a table stand and used as a spirit screen. Placed in doorways or windows, spirit screens were used to deflect unwelcome spirits and prevent their entry into the home. The mitered frame encloses the original mirror, now beautifully spoiled from a century of use.
