The form of this low square-corner chest from northern China has a rustic simplicity that modern furniture designers often try to replicate. The cabinet's minimal frame and open flat surfaces provided the maker with an irresistible canvas upon which to illustrate a scene of joy and abundance. Bordered by scrollwork, each door is painted with birds and butterflies amid an array of colorful blossoms. The painted doors are accentuated by the chest's black lacquer finish, now beautifully worn from a century of use.
