Taking months or even years to create, this gorgeous hand-knotted carpet was painstakingly crafted by tying pieces of vegetable-dyed wool around a cotton warp in thousands upon thousands of individual knots. A true labor of love, the resulting carpet is marked by subtle imperfections that reveal the weaver's hand.

Crafted in the early 20th century, this rectangular area carpet is patterned with an array of precious objects, including a tripod incense burner, a vase filled with plum branches and a Hu vase filled with peony blossoms. The central scene is enclosed by a simple meander and a main border of floral diamond-work and ribbon-clad scholars' objects. Knotted in a palette of pink, purple, brown and orange, the small carpet adds rich color and texture to any interior.

From the collection of Frances and Gary Comer.

Areas of wear have been rewoven over the years.
