Japanese Gilt Traveling Shrine of Senju Kannon

The simple exterior of even black lacquer that encases this 19th-century Japanese traveling shrine belies the splendor within. The hinged doors open to reveal an intricately carved gilt figure of the bodhisattva Senju Kannon, or "Thousand-Armed Kannon."

Described as the "Buddha of Infinite Compassion," Kannon is the embodiment of mercy and makes himself available to all who call upon him with all their mind. To aid the countless beings in need, the Buddha granted Kannon 1000 eyes with which to witness suffering and 1000 hands with which to relieve it.

Senju Kannon is depicted here seated upon a lotus blossom, flanked by two attendants and surrounded by crashing waves. He holds his front arms in the gesture of perfection, revealing his enlightenment. His many arms each hold a ritual object, including the axe to cut away ignorance, the wheel of law to stop regression, and the sword to conquer evil spirits.
