Showcasing the smooth, restrained sculptural style of the Dan people of Western Africa, this fetish figure from the early to mid 20th century would have been called upon to bring good luck, keep away evil spirits, or connect with ancestors. Imbued with power the moment it was carved, this figure was consecrated with wax, mud, or resin to darken its color and invest it with a spiritual force. Featuring naturalistic facial features and a carefully detailed hairstyle, the head is positioned on a single, sandal-clad foot. The countless applications of balms and the caresses of many hands have burnished the figure with a silky patina that begs to be touched.
