China was the earliest known civilization to create works using cast iron, first appearing during the illustrious Zhou dynasty (1046-256 BCE). This pair of round basins continues tradition and references19th-century iron vessels used for collecting rain water near homes in case of fire. Both basins are decorated in low relief with a trailing vine motif bearing lotus blossoms, an emblem of summer and symbols of purity and perfection. Balanced on tripod feet and fitted with two ring handles, these unusual containers are wonderful as garden planters or firewood bins.
