This rustic container was made over a hundred and fifty years ago to measure and hold a dou of rice, an ancient Chinese measurement. The rice measure is crafted of northern elmwood (yumu) with tapered sides and an arched handle. The outer layer of red paint has aged gently for a smooth, patinated finish and a worn appearance from the touch of hands over time. The corners are seamed with thin sawtooth joints and reinforced with metal banding for added character.
