Working within the time-honored, blue-and-white porcelain tradition, this lidded ginger jar depicts a scholar engaged in the four arts he must master. Separated by screen motifs, the jar shows a scholar painting, playing the qin, a stringed instrument, doing calligraphy and playing the strategy game of Go.
