Conch Shell Charm Ring

Dated to the late 19th century, this silver charm ring was crafted by the Miao peoples of the Guizhou province and was believed to protect the wearer from bad luck and malevolent spirits. The ring is decorated in relief with a simple floral motif bordered by conch shells. A common motif in Chinese art, the conch shell is a ritual instrument and a Buddhist symbol, representing the Voice of the Buddha and the transmission of his teachings. The central design is flanked on either side by two fruit bats with outstretched wings, a common symbol of happiness and good fortune. The ring is complete with three thin chains hanging from the band, each strung with small charms like a knotted silk tassel.
