With exemplary proportions, fine carvings, and soft, fluid lines, this pair of early 19th century armchairs are among the most elegant in our collection. The chairs are designed in a traditional style known as a "yoke-back chair," defined by a tall back, curved arms, a flat back yoke, and a protruding top crest rail. Their finely carved backsplats and aprons are adorned with bamboo detailing, a motif for winter and longevity as well as a reference to early Chinese furniture forms made from steamed and bent bamboo. The crest rail is carved in relief with a large bat, a motif for happiness and success. Once coated by a dark lacquer finish, the chairs have developed a beautifully patinated surface that accentuates the fine grain of northern elm (yumu).

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
