This monumental early 19th century flanked top altar table from China's Shanxi province is notable for its robust traditional style. The top is carved from a solid plank of elmwood timber and the thick side panels are carved with uniquely smooth and rounded auspicious ruyi, symbols of good fortune and prosperity. A table of this grand scale would have been placed against the back wall of a large hall or temple where it would have served as a platform for incense burners, candles, and offerings.

Fungus of Immortality

Originally a Daoist symbol from ancient Chinese mythology, the ruyi is an auspicious symbol that references the lingzhi fungus, also known as reishi, a mushroom with healing properties thought to ensure immortality.
