This solid plank top table, known in colloquial Mandarin as "dubar," is a truly thrilling find. Unlike the top surface of many Qing-dynasty tables, constructed of a frame with a floating center panel, the dubar's surface is made of a select piece of northern elmwood. This robust timber would have been a significant investment, likely picked by the person who would have commissioned this table in the mid-19th century. Rich with textured grain and markings, the unyielding elmwood surface gracefully gives way to a gently curved apron and streamlined sword-shaped legs.
