A tradition dating back to the Northern Song dynasty (960-1126), wine tables have been used for centuries at social gatherings as a spot to converse, sip wine, and make toasts. This 18th-century side table celebrates this time-honored tradition with beautiful materials and an elegant design. The table features a floating panel top and slightly splayed legs linked by straight stretchers. The shaped legs are outlined by a continuous beaded edge that connects to simple curved spandrels. Decorated only by the irregular patterning of the wood grain, this table is a gorgeous example of the inherent beauty of Chinese northern elmwood (yumu).
