Crafted in the mid-19th century, this console table has a long, plank top surface with cloud-form flanges at each end, indicating is original use as a domestic altar for ancestor worship. The ornate front is finely carved with decorative scrollwork, cabriole legs, and archaistic dragon spandrels. Carved panels on the front apron have been converted into three drawers with the addition of brass pulls, each with a different floral design. Once cloaked in an opaque lacquer finish, the altar has gained a beautiful texture from years of use, revealing the warm coloring of Chinese elmwood beneath.
