This grand black lacquer cabinet epitomizes the austere beauty of classical Chinese furniture design. Dated to the mid-19th century, the tall cabinet was crafted in Zhejiang province of camphor wood (changmu), a common material for storage chests due to its insect-repelling properties. The paneled bi-fold doors open to reveal a spacious interior with one shelf and four shallow drawers. Four additional drawers line the bottom apron, the perfect place to stow household odds and ends. Bare of ornament aside from its brass hardware, the cabinet's clean lines are accentuated by a richly aged black lacquer finish. A large floral lock plate secures the doors, beautifully formed with vase-shaped pulls for peace and double fish lock pin posts for martial bliss.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
