Generally the symbols carved into an inkstone held personal meaning for the scholar who used it. This stone is finely carved with two decorated double gourds, symbols of perpetuity and a bat in flight, the symbol of good luck. The water dipper is contoured to the shape of the bats wings and the ink well is defined by an incised frame.
