The Mangbetu people focused on highly realistic art forms. Two aspects of the tribe's traditional culture are portrayed in this masterful jug—tall, coiffured hair and a ritually elongated child's head. This water jug represents a child prior to the ritual, but with hair foretelling the desired human form. The ceramicist expertly incorporated these features along with small pointed breasts and a charming collar into a traditional pot form, all while preserving the artistry of the girl depicted.
