Collecting was a popular pastime for well-to-do Ming and Qing dynasty gentleman, and shelves like these would have been ideal places to display jades, curios, collectibles, and important texts. Each shelf is backed with lattice, brilliantly joined together piece by piece and executed with puzzle-like precision. The drawers feature intricate relief carvings, continuing the hand-worked decorative theme of the lattice. It is extraordinary that this pair of fine shelves has remained together for more than 150 years.
