Over century and a half ago, an craftsperson from China’s Anhui province constructed this chest of the finest elmwood. At first glance it has a beautiful simplicity, but subtle details make this chest particularly striking. The brass hardware is original, and the cordovan lacquered finish has developed rich character over time, revealing the texture of the wood underneath. The artisan who constructed this cabinet would have hand-applied countless coats of lacquer to achieve the chest's deep burgundy color and glossy sheen.
